Fine Handcrafted Fairburn Agate Jewelry, DBsAgates.com showcases the fine lapidary craftsmanship of Mr. Don Bahr from Rapid City, S.D. DB enjoys hunting agates, and creating jewelry from gold and silver.
The Fairburn Agate was designated as South Dakota's State Gemstone on February ll, 1966.
Fairburns differ radically from location to location. Typically with these agates, you'll find on one hill, the colors may be blacks & whites and the fortifications could be wide bands.
A mile or so away at another location you could have reds and browns with thin bands.
Fairburns are among the most colorful agates in the world. Those who look for them will agree that they are becoming exceedingly scarce but not impossible to find.
Lapidary defined in the Glossary of Geology-----pertains to the cutting, grinding and polishing of precious stones. I contend that though a person can cut and polish certain Fairburn agates, these rare stones will still maintain their natural beauty. I will agree with others that roughly 90% of them are best left alone and in their natural state, as found. As to what we would do with them, should only play up their natural beauty.
How do you know if you have a rare valuable Fairburn Agate?
Ask yourself, 'Does it have a unusually beautiful pattern?' ... 'Is it rare in size, color or design?'
If it has either of these or a distinct picture pattern, you may have a rare fairburn in your collection!!
Happy hunting and keep looking up (and down) ! ~ DB
